Cathy Allen is a ceramic artist based on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, with over 17 years of experience working with clay. Her practice brings together her love of plein air painting and ceramics, translating sketches and observations made in the landscape onto functional ceramic vessels using watercolour underglazes, pencil and charcoal.
Her organic forms capture the spontaneous energy of nature through gestural marks and intricate textures.
The vessels hold both the memory of a place and the experience of being there.

From my plein air sketches I like to create a unique blend of form and imagery echoing patterns and textures of the landscape. Using underglazes, pencil and charcoal, the imagery is spontaneous and gestural, being an observation of my time in nature.
